Global warming is something we can not escape from but we can improve it.
(Drawing by myself)
With Glaciers decreasing, water levels rising, along with the temperature of the earth our planet is becoming increasingly more flooded every year. And every single person on this earth, including you, are at fault. In fact, in 2020 alone the average global temperatures were 1.76 degrees F (0.98 degrees C) which is warmer than the 20th century average (Lindsey Dahlman, 2021)! With the second-hottest year recorded it's clear that we still need to drastically improve the situation.
But just how do I help? You may ask.
Well, to know how to improve the situation you first need to observe how and what we are doing to make such a dramatical impact (on a global scale) and Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to observe this.
Just for a quick summary here’s a list of what past and current generations are doing that negatively effects the planet :
- Overly Burning fossil fuels
- Throwing litter places aside from the bin
- Waisting Electricity
- Clearing the land for human gain
- Industrialisation
-Agriculture
Most of which cause "greenhouse effect" — warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space.
If you want more details about the situation here’s some relevant youtube video's:

Although you hear a lot about the dramatic things that individuals have done such as team trees who, to this day have almost raised $25,000 to plant one tree per dollar donated.

But helping the planet doesn't even need to cost anything!
In fact, we can easily do small things in our day to day lives, such as pick up litter, recycle, use light or wind power to power you house. Even just spreading the word and putting political pressure for action would help the fight for a better climate friendly future! I’ve personally gone to the beach to assist in litter picking and made sure that i’m not wasting water whilst trying to avoid purchasing products with a needlessly large amount of plastic covering.
But how does this relate architecturally?
Well, with architecture being physically built, damaging the environment there's no escape from it. In fact, according to the 2019 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme, the building and construction sector accounted for 36 percent of final energy use ("2019 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction | World Green Building Council", 2022). Both “embodied energy” such as smelting steel and material shipping and the “in-use” energy of heating etc have extreme impacts on the environment. Drastically increasing our levels of CO2, Methane and more. I believe that within architecture we have to be mindful of what buildings are used for. Only building what is necessary and be more careful of which materials we use to help transportation levels low.
Finally, everyone needs to do their bit to save each other now! I want to see a future in which my grandchildren and others can thrive on clean energy. Where people in other countries aren’t suffering with starvation and drought. With fossil fuels still available for use yet clean energy such as solar being priorities. With people in countries such as China being able to breath properly within their city centers. We need to act before it's too late. Act quick. Act now! And remember to look after all, we are in this together.
