Shinden style of Heian aristocracy features:

- Long covered covered corridors that connect each residential home within a garden, governed by Feng Shui principles and Gentlemen principles

- Moveable Tatami Matt's

- Main building - shinden: Built on the on the central axis of the property facing south, overlooking the courtyard with the tainoya placed directly to the East and West of the shinden. ("Japanese architecture | History, Characteristics, & Facts", 2022)

With these layouts focused towards the Buddhists gardens faced at the south central courtyard it is evident to me that this style of housing strongly represents the growing Buddhist influence of Japan over time.

Medieval Samurai houses

Functional purpose with more divisions between public and private spaces as well as seperate structured for different purposes. Nijo castle is an example of this:

- The Samurai were the only people allowed to have walled homes and gates (either Nagayamon or Yakuimon) to form formal entrances with a singular tatami mat room as you enter. ("Samurai Residences - Jcastle.info", 2022)

- Each home was built around a central room with others divided off with sliding doors. ("Samurai Residences - Jcastle.info", 2022)

Shoin style and its design system - 1338-73

Developed In Muromachi, shoin ( the writing hall) is featured in Kaisho of Shinden and Kojo monastries with main characteristics of Tokonoma, Chigaidana and more.

The architects in the shoin style had to have an artistic background that of which is similar to those of Brunelleschi and Michelangelo, linking this to the Renaissance.

My favourite period/element within Japanese architecture has to be the Shinden style of Heian aristocracy because if it's raised connectivity that allows the architecture to not necessarily damage the nature underneath whilst still keeping a certain amount of community within Japanese society. As well as the fact that all buildings are the southern courtyard facing which gives a consistent observation of nature which in turn shows a sense of piece and tranquility within architecture focused towards those who are upper class.

Due to my love of Japanese Shinden style of Heian aristocracy architecture I chose to draw my own digital composition of an example in a similar style of artwork that would be seen on fusuma:

  1. The digital rendition is very nice and stylistic. I like the choice of art style as it seems to be inspired by traditional Japanese Ink paintings with it's watery colour palette.
