How do we truly express ourselves?

Image
(Collage made by myself)  Should clothes/fashion have a gender? Should  self expression be demonstrated further in society without gender specification? And should architects specify their designs towards specific genders?  In my opinion. No.  It's fascinating to percieve how various generations percieve the roles of gender self expression and identity and how that has changed in society throughout the years.  When questioning someone of generation X (42-57) on gender association after showing one of my friends they spoke:  " When I was your age there were few men willing to walk around in dresses and corsets."  Whilst I can perceive as to why this happened  during the 1970s etc I'm glad that society has become more open about what people can where and that it's starting to become irrelevant as self expression is the most important thing in my opinion.  But how does this relate architecturally?  Well, throughout history, women have been ...

The peacefullness of Japanese architecture

Image
Japanese architecture is peaceful due to it's links with nature, beautiful and intricate but complex . The ease of entrances such as shoji and transitions between buildings/rooms form a sense sharing and community that you can rarely find in other architectural types. The Politics of architecture: the relationships between people and how they decide to change their conditions of living

Image
Although within society we are constantly try t o improve the equality of female to male standing within society I am extremely surprised that the first female president of RIBA was in 2009. Yet the first female prime minister (Margret Thatcher) was in 1979. This 30 years difference is appalling and extreme changes need to be made.  As a woman myself I believe that change needs to be made at a much faster rate and that we need to be considered further within the architecturally community. Zaha Hadid as an inspiration of mine I can perceive how much change a woman can make architecturally and aspire to design such beautiful structures as her.  A beautiful interview with Zaha Hadid:  https://youtu.be/t29zH7ZpxqQ The configuration between Scotland's and England's seating in Parliament is extremely interesting as the Scottish curvature seating wise gives this sense if togetherness in comparisons to England's obvious division. It is also interesting to observe the archite...

Mannerism: Escapism yet precision

Image
The transition period between the first 1500 crises to the Baroque developments, with the classical ideal starting to be percieved as a historical event. The two main elements of Mannerism are rule preciseness and escapism of the rules.  Michelangelo, born 6th March 1475, embrassed this through articulate white walls, filled with detail's of smaller, more personalised areas such as windows in between the giant order of columns and several floors.  Some examples of his work include:  Works for the Medici family including Peters Cathedral The vault of Cappella Sista in Romes vestibule (designed in 1508 with details) percieved as none load bearing  Palaces such as Campidoglio - trapezoid https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.viaggiart.com%2Fresources%2Fimages%2Fxl%2Flist%2Fimage%2F26206-60e846fd40154005126d4186f526b684-1615688457.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fviaggiart.com%2Fen%2Froma%2Fpoint-of-interest%2F16902%2Fpiazza-del-campidoglio.html...

Religion in Architecture

Image
Nearly every religion has a form of architecture that influences and impacts peoples lives significantly and the purposes of these buildings have changed over time. For example, during the Middle Ages churches were used to care for the sick and poor. It's glass windows surrounded by walls of stories of grandiose occasions within Christianity giving a positive sign of hope and a bright beautiful light towards those with a glimpse of hope of survival.                                        https://images.app.goo.gl/Y4C4kPsFiaWA3PxY7 However, in early Christian architecture there was a tendancy to form more isolated Monastic communities with the interior and exterior with darker colours which I personally associate with quite solemn yet overwhelming and almost depressing atmosphere which is oppositional to the calmness it wishes to depict.  But as Gothic architecture ...

Architectural icons of the Renaissance

Image
‘Rebirth’. A sense of change and transformation with new perspectives from Architect’s such as  Brunelleschi and Alberti beginning to unfold. This is The Renaissance as it began to transform Italy in the early 14th/15th century. With Florence being the central  place in which Renaissance humanism began to flourish (architecture based off of classical works of the Greek and Romanesque). https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.britannica.com%2F81%2F137681-004-1B1F5045%2FFlorence-Italy-World-Heritage-site-1982.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.britannica.com%2Fplace%2FFlorence&tbnid=ytxUcHFmSgmkwM&vet=1&docid=-8JX_7FVnX-BFM&w=501&h=392&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim The world and it’s environment surrounds us. We transform it, manipulate it, work with it and, in my opinion, it is our obligation to care for it. The perspective invention embraces this, with man being central in the universe. Brunelleschi (1377-1446) was one of the first...

The variations of Domus

Image
Personally, I find that moving Domus temporarily (e.g. 1 year) to be enjoyable and fascinating  because of my love of travelling; In the future I want to travel to Japan and around Asia for approximately 6 months. The environment of Japan is especially alluring, with extremely beautiful waterfalls and trees such as the cherry blossom. However, living in the Contemporary Nomad dwellings such as caravans, huts and Igloos (as innuits do) would be too chaotic for me as wouldn't enjoy the large amount of constant traveling that would be required.  https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.baileyofbristol.co.uk%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F07%2Fcaravan-v-motorhome-group.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.baileyofbristol.co.uk%2Fnews-events%2Fcaravans-vs-motorhomes-uk-which-should-you-choose%2F&tbnid=0YRXMFkNvIdiPM&vet=1&docid=z-JjwySyR-3OfM&w=900&h=600&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim On the the other hand many people settle down in one ...

We are all Equal.

Image
The concerns: In 1955 Rosa Parkes was jailed for refusing to give give her seat to a white man. In 2020 George Floyd was killed by a white policeman.  Racism is still ever present within modern day society.  https://images.app.goo.gl/khCeUPyHTfnKq99X6 Stated by the Office for national statistics, there were 64.6 million people in UK in mid 2014, with 56.2 million being white British. This high percentage is also reflected in schools and architectural environments.  This is extremely concerning and shameful that a group of people who pride itself on diversity ethnicity wise with even adverts on television shaming such actions as the ones shown above. As well as the the news consistently pushing representation on how we should treat others would have such appealing statistics and events. Should treat others such appallingly. Not only do I think that not only should we welcome and employ more people of all ethnicities into...

Vaults, Buttresses and dimensions of design Vs Medieval domestic architecture

Image
Gothic architecture contains 4 different types of vaults; Barrel, Groin, Rib and Fan, with the most common being the Rib vaults. https://images.app.goo.gl/jmFRtcUA65fETrjo9 The building’s would take approximately 50 years to build with complexity's with the weight, height, detailing (overtime with the buttresses), thickness and more. These allowed openings for extremely ornate and gorgeous artwork that influence those who observe. The three eras of Gothic architecture are: Early Gothic (1120-1200) An example being the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Paris, built in 1140 being the first with precise vaulting and chains of windows along the perimeter. High Gothic (1200-1280) England - (1300-1375 Began with the subdivision of Rayonant with a more decorative style in comparison to the prior . An example of this being the Chartres Cathedral in France 1194-1220. (Close up drawn by myself). Late Gothic (1280-1500) -   The 'flamboyant' style   Characterized by prominent vertical lines in ...
